Arizona's Final, Unofficial Election Results on the World Wide

Phoenix, AZ 14Nov96,10:30 a.m. All counties have completed counting the votes for the candidates whose names appeared on the 1996 General Election ballot, and the final, unofficial numbers are posted on the Secretary of State's website. Maricopa County will finalize the numbers for all write-in candidates by Friday, November 15, 1996, but those results will not appear on the website. The web address is:

In the closely-watched Congressional
District 6 race, incumbent Republican J.D. Hayworth prevailed
over Democratic challenger Steve Owens by 2,474 votes. The numbers
were:
Hayworth - 121,431
Owens - 118,957
Anderson (Libertarian) - 14,899
Statewide voter turnout was 63.9%,
substantially higher than the nationwide turnout percentage, but
slightly lower than anticipated by Arizona's election officials
and significantly lower than the 77% turnout in 1992.
The official canvass will be signed
by the Secretary of State at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 25, 1996
in her office conference room. The address is 1700 West Washington,
7th Floor, Phoenix, Arizona.
The presidential electors will meet on Monday, December 16, 1996 in the Secretary of State's conference room to cast their ballots for the office of president. The time is set by Congress, and has not been communicated to the Secretary of State as of the date of this press release.
