HISTORY
Died in office January 29, 1929. Mr. Callaghan's obituary stated that he was stricken on January 5 and taken to the hospital.  Newspapers did not mention his absence from the swearing-in of officials on January 7. While at the hospital he was consulted but never got to officially serve. On January 29 George W. Nickle was the first person appointed to be Secretary of State. He declined the appointment.  I.P. "Ike" Frazier was appointed on January 30 and accepted.
