Secretary
of State Jan Brewer Releases General Election
Statewide Voter Registration Figures
PHOENIX
– Secretary of State Jan Brewer today released the General Election
voter registration figures for the state of Arizona.
As of midnight, Oct.
4, 2004, the deadline for registering to vote in the General Election,
the statewide voter registration total had increased to 2,643,331, up
203,187 from the Primary Election figures released on Sept. 1. These new
figures also show an increase of 470,209 registered voters from the last
Presidential General Election in 2000.
There are 1,055,252
registered Republicans, an increase of 78,972 since September of this
year and up 113,174 from 2000. Registered Democrats total 914,264 an increase
of 58,189 since September of this year and up 83,360 since 2000. Registered
Libertarians number 18,261 an increase of 832 registrations since September
of this year and up 5,685 since the 2000 General Election.
Arizonans registered as Independents or as members of unrecognized parties
are grouped together in the “other” category on the voter
registration figures. The voters in that group total 655,554 an increase
of 65,194 and an increase of 273,486 from 2000.
“The interest in this election has gained momentum for many reasons,
the first of which is the presidential race,” stated Secretary Jan
Brewer. “Contentious races, interesting ballot propositions, and
local ballot issues are other reasons why voter registration numbers rose
so significantly. Our office, the county recorders and the political parties
all focused on voter outreach efforts this past year and as evidenced
by these numbers, these efforts have paid off.”
The Arizona Department of Economic Security reports the state’s
voting age population to be 3,763,685 based on Census 2000 data. Using
that figure, 70.2 percent of eligible Arizonans are registered to vote,
which is a 5.4 percent increase since September 2004. According to the
Federal Election Commission, the actual number of eligible voters, those
that are legally entitled to vote, will always be less than the voting
age population because of the inclusion of resident aliens (both legal
and illegal), as well as convicted felons who have not yet had their voting
rights restored under the various state laws, persons adjudicated incapacitated
by a court of law, or those persons otherwise ineligible to vote.
Secretary Brewer stated, “I think it’s critical for all voters
to take the next step and participate in this very important election.
I encourage everyone who is registered to get out on Election Day and
exercise their right to vote.”
A copy of the voter registration
figures by county is included with this press release. Copies are
available at the Secretary of State office on the 7th Floor of the state
capitol, or by calling the Election Services
