Sec. of State Brewer Extends Appointment Process for Clean Elections Seat
Potential candidates for new Commissioner must meet strict criteria
PHOENIX --Secretary of State Jan Brewer today announced she
would extend the nomination process to appoint the next Clean Election Commissioner
by two additional weeks. Due to the holiday season, the Secretary of State
decided to lengthen the nomination process to give people additional time to
turn in their applications. The term for this seat is scheduled to begin on
February 1, 2006 and expire on January 31, 2011.
“I am committed to finding a qualified and responsible candidate who will
work hard and provide loyal service on behalf of the citizens of Arizona,” stated
Secretary Brewer, “I am very interested in candidates who can bring fairness
and consistency to this process.”
The candidates for Commissioner must meet the following criteria per Arizona
Revised Statute:
Shall not be a member of the Democratic Party;
Shall
have been registered to vote continuously recorded for at least five years immediately
preceding appointment with the same political party or as an independent;
Shall
be committed to enforcing the Act in an honest, independent and impartial fashion
and to seek to uphold public confidence in the integrity of the electoral system;
Shall
be a qualified elector who has not, in the previous five years in the state,
been appointed to, been elected to, or run for any public office, including precinct
committeeman, or served as an officer of a political party;
No commissioner,
during his or her tenure or for three years thereafter, shall seek or hold any
other public office, serve as an officer of a political party;
No
commissioner, during his or her tenure or for three years thereafter, shall
seek or hold any other public office, serve as an officer of any political
committee, or employ or be employed as a lobbyist.

the appropriate forms and application materials directly from the Secretary
of State's office by calling (602) 542-0681, or by e-mail at www.azsos.gov.
Applications should be mailed or hand delivered to the Secretary of State office
at the following address by January 13th, 2006 by 2:00 pm.
