Sec. of State Brewer Releases Latest Statewide Voter Registration Figures

New Figures Have a Direct Affect on Upcoming 2006 Primary And General Election

PHOENIX -- Arizona Secretary of State Jan Brewer today released the voter registration figures for the State of Arizona as of March 1, 2006. While overall statewide voter registration has increased by over 350,000 in the past year, registrations decreased since January 1, 2006 by 41,202 to a total of 2,624,559 voters.

Secretary of State Jan Brewer stated, “The recent decrease in the voter registration totals reflect continuing voter roll clean up efforts by the County Recorders. I am pleased to see the continuing efforts of all the County Recorders in ensuring that our voter registration data is up to date and complete.”

As of March 1, 2006, there are 1,042,420 registered Republicans, a decrease of 19,809, since the January 2006 voter registration figures. Registered Democrats total 890,861, a decrease of 19,346 since January 2006. Registered Libertarians number 17,793, a decrease of 602 registered voters.

Those registered as independents or as members of unrecognized parties are grouped together in the “other” category on the voter registration figures. The latest total of voters in that group is 673,485, a decrease of 1,445.

The Census 2000 data announced by the Arizona Department of Economic Security reports the state's voting age population to be 3,763,685. Using that figure, 69.7 percent of eligible Arizonans are registered to vote. According to the Federal Election Commission, the actual number of eligible voters, those that are legally entitled to vote, will always be less than the voting age population because of the inclusion of resident aliens (both legal and illegal), as well as convicted felons who have not yet had their voting rights restored under the various State laws, persons adjudicated incapacitated by a court of law, or those persons otherwise ineligible to vote.

Signature requirements for Statewide Partisan Nominating Petitions are based on the March 1 Voter Registration. The signature requirements for the 2006 primary and general elections can be found on the Secretary of State's website at www.azsos.gov .

A copy of the voter registration figures by county is on the Secretary of State Web page. Copies are available at the Secretary of State's office on the 7th floor of the State Capitol, or by calling the Election Services Division at 602-542-8683 or 1-877-THE VOTE (1-877-843-8683).
