PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release August 11, 2009 For more information, contact Jim Drake at (602) 542-0681 Statement by Arizona Secretary of State Ken BennettArizona will not have a special election on November 3 to ask voters if they approve of raising the state sales tax and adopting other budget measures. After the Legislature was unable to pass legislation today, there is not enough time remaining to do all the things necessary to hold a special election on that date. Many local governments throughout the state will still be holding local elections November 3, and I encourage Arizona voters to participate in those elections. The earliest possible date for a statewide special election is now December 8. The Legislature will still need to act within the next couple of weeks in order to hold an early December election and this office will continue to work closely with local election officials to conduct a statewide election if one is called. For more information, please contact Amy Bjelland, State Elections Director, at 602-542-8683 or abjelland@azsos.gov. -30- |
