Voter Registration and Permanent Early Voter List Participation Grow

PHOENIX – The latest voter registration figures are out and according to Secretary of State Ken Bennett, Arizona has seen an increase of 1,986 to the state's voter registration rolls since the last report in April.  Also during that time, 71,227 voters have signed up for Arizona's popular Permanent Early Voter List (PEVL) where they can automatically receive an early ballot for any election which they are qualified to participate in.

"It appears that even during the dog days of summer people are taking time to register to vote," said Secretary Bennett.  "Whether it be online at home, or in line at motor vehicle, our state continues to see more and more people registering to vote.  With so many important issues being debated around the country, it's great to see people involving themselves in the process."

Since voter registration figures were last released in April, 13,149 voters have registered without party preference or designated an unrecognized party, bringing the total to 1,043,649 "independent" voters.  Over the same period, Republican registration slipped 3,243 to 1,138,802.  Democrats fell by 7,892 to 999,232 putting them under a million for the first time since August of 2008.

"It's important to remember that only those who have registered with a political party will be able to participate in their respective Presidential primary," Bennett continued.  "With President Obama unlikely to face a primary opponent, many believe that only the Republican Party will be participating in the Presidential Preference Election next year.  If that's the case, only registered Republicans will be able to vote in that election."

Libertarians make up a little less than one percent of the state’s total registration with 24,854, while 5,174 voters are currently registered as members of the Green Party.  This puts total voter registration for the state at 3,211,711.  Additionally, the Americans Elect Party recently joined the Republican, Democratic, Libertarian and Green parties as recognized political parties in Arizona.  Registration numbers for Americans Elect will be available in the next voter registration report.

The latest voter registration figures compiled by county, congressional district and legislative district are available on the Secretary of State’s website, or by calling 1-877-THE-VOTE.
